Eat Stop Eat: the "no diet" way to lose weight for good -- and keep it off

Caffeine and weight loss: is caffeine a diet aid?

by angela.booth on July 14, 2007

Caffeine has diuretic effects, and if you retain water, caffeine can seem like a great dieting aid. However, the water weight you “lose” when you drink coffee, tea and other caffeine drinks is soon regained.

Caffeine is common in diet pills
Many diet pills have caffeine as one of their main ingredients. This is because caffeine is a terrific stimulant to the human body. There may also be some appetite suppression effect from drinking caffeine.

Some diet plans such as The Zone and the Atkins diet discourage caffeine in dieting. These diets subscribe to the theory that caffeine has an affect on the hormones adrenaline and glucagon and this causes the increased blood sugar levels. For dieters, especially diabetics, this can have a significant negative effect.

Should you continue to drink coffee when you diet? This is a personal choice. However, if you’re looking for a drink which is somewhat healthier, consider trading some of your daily coffee for green tea.
