Although our family and friends love us, they can become saboteurs when we’re trying to lose weight.
In “Friends’ comments can wreck diet plans” Dr. Timothy Quinn reports:
Many patients have left my clinic motivated to lose weight through lifestyle changes of their diet and exercise but find it difficult when confronted with family and friends. The patients hear statements like, “You think you’re too good to eat with us,” or “You are trying to be someone you are really not.” They tell me family and friends ask them if they are sick or if they are going through a major stressor such as a possible divorce. I have even been told that a number of close family and friends actually asked the patient trying to loose weight if he or she has AIDS.
Chances are that you’ve been on the receiving end of diet-sabotage too – sweet treats bought to “cheer you up, have just one, it won’t hurt”, and so on.
Learn to say “no”
Learning to say no to family and friends is difficult, but you can do it. If you find yourself giving in too often, get some advice from a doctor, or try a session of hypnosis. Hypnosis can boost your confidence, so that you can resist pressure, without becoming upset.
