Weight loss and pregnancy: yo-yo dieting is dangerous

by angela.booth on August 12, 2007

If you’re overweight, and are looking forward to having a child, beware of yo-yo dieting.

“Pregnancy Danger: Becoming A Yo-Yo Mom” says:

…experts say that if a woman’s weight fluctuates too widely between pregnancies, it could put their future pregnancies at risk.

“Women should really try not to gain too much, and try to lose too much,” said Dr. Gene Burkett, an obstetrician at the University of Miami.

Studies show that gaining too much weight between pregnancies raises the risk of pregnancy complications and health problems like diabetes and high blood pressure.

Not sure what to do? Have a complete physical, and talk to your doctor about your plans. It’s best to be guided by medical experts when it comes to your health and that of your child.
