A tried and true method of losing weight is counting the calories of the food you eat. If you expend more energy than the calories you eat, then you will lose weight.

What’s a calorie?

Shape tells you. Shape: “It’s a measure of potential energy in food. Technically, one calorie is the amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. ‘Calories are like gasoline. In the same way that gas makes your car go, calories fuel your body,’ says D. Milton Stokes, R.D., president of a nutrition counseling fi rm in Norwalk, Connecticut.”

Unfortunately, the process of calories in and energy out = weight loss doesn’t work like a science lab experiment. Your body is quite capable of throttling down – lowering your metabolism – and conserving calories.

If you base your weight loss method solely on counting calories, you’ll need to take this into account.
