Since a vegetarian diet is low in fat and in calories, you can eat more, and still lose weight. However, making the change to a mainly vegetarian diet can be difficult, if you're used to eating a standard meat-based diet.
What can you eat on a vegetarian diet?
It's hard to visualize what a vegetarian diet looks like, if you're not a vegetarian. For a 1200 calorie a day diet, you could eat five servings of grains (bread, cereal), three servings of vegetables, two pieces of fruit, two servings of dairy products, and five ounces of beans, nuts or eggs.
Beware of commercially prepared "vegetarian" foods
If you decide to try a primarily vegetarian diet to lose weight, you'll need to cook your own food. Most commercially prepared vegetarian food relies heavily on fat, to enhance the taste. Read the labels and the number of calories per servings carefully.
