Losing weight after 40 – coping with perimenopause

by angela.booth on April 8, 2008

The term “perimenopause” means the years just before your menopause. It usually happens in your 40s, but it can occur in your 30s too.

If you are going through perimenopause and gaining oodles of weight, you are not alone. Lots of women of your age are going exactly through this phase. And don’t think that thin women will never get overweight. There are many thin and slim women who have become victims of obesity, thanks to perimenopause. However, it is not that you cannot reverse this process. In this article I will tell you how to lose weight even if you are going through perimenopause.

So why do women gain weight during the perimenopause period? While there is no concrete answer to this, it is generally believed that the reason behind sudden weight gain is hormonal changes. Another reason is the slow metabolism that is caused during perimenopause. What is most irritating is that you don’t gain weight around your hips and thighs. Instead, your waistline gets wider, with the result that you cannot fit into your old dresses. To me, that is nothing short of discomfort!.

Here are a few steps you can take to lose weight during perimenopause:

1. Eat healthy

First of all, let me tell you that I hate ‘dieting’. Dieting deprives my body of the basic essential nutrients it needs in order to function properly. Instead, I choose to eat healthy foods such as lots of fruits, raw vegetables, etc. If you eat those healthy foods, you will not gain much weight; on the other hand, you will gain lots of lean muscles, with the result that your body’s strength will increase and you will get a tremendous energy boost.

If you try to cut down on your calorie intake I can assure you that you will do yourself more harm than good. As for counting calories, that is just too irritating for me!

2. Cut down on alcohol and white foods

Alcohol and fizzy drinks do nothing except adding to your fat level. Try to replace alcohol and sweet drinks with water. Water is a healthy substitute that will help you burn fat.

You should also eliminate all white foods as a rule – white flour, white bread and white sugar are all rich in calories and hence bad for you. You can replace them with whole grain wheat and other healthy foods.

3. Cut down on your salt intake

If you are a fan of salty foods, here is bad news for you: salt causes stomach bloating and acidity, and overtime, it will cause water retention problem, which in turn will increase your body weight. You may be fooled into thinking that you have gained a lot of weight but it is actually watery weight that you have, and once you cut back on your salt intake, you will eventually lose this watery weight!

Use affirmations to lose weight

Can you “think thin” and make it work? Yes you can. Weight loss affirmations really work. Here’s what one person said about affirmations with Sculptor 3:

“I purchased Sculptor 3 several months ago. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Over the years, I’ve spent thousands of dollars purchasing all sorts of “self help” books and tapes. Your program is by far the most satisfying to date. It is truly amazing–a well thought out and well developed concept. Additionally, your ongoing support via the newsletters and the extraordinary amount of peripheral materials, sources, and resources make this program one of the best that I have seen.”
