Weight Loss – Help, My Diet’s Not Working Any More

by angela.booth on June 25, 2008

Has your diet stopped working? When you’re on a diet, you can lose weight week after week, then suddenly weight loss stops: you’ve hit a plateau. Discover how to get back on track.

Weight loss plateaus are annoying. You wonder what you’re doing wrong.

A plateau occurs when your body is at equilibrium: energy in equals energy out, so your weight loss stops.

However, there’s also a chance that it’s not a real plateau. You may still be losing fat, but gaining muscle. This is a good thing. Muscle tissue increases your metabolism, and you’ll get back to losing weight soon.

Here’s how to cope with a plateau.

1. Change what you’re eating – eat more good food

Firstly, take a look at your diet. Perhaps fast food and treats have become a mainstay of your diet. If so, eliminate all fast food. Get back to your diet, but make sure that you’re eating enough.

If you don’t eat enough, your body’s metabolism will slow down; this is not a good thing. So eat MORE – but ensure that the “more” is more protein, not more carbohydrates.

2. Exercise more

Are you exercising? If you’re going to the gym each day, then your plateau is occurring because your muscle mass is increasing. Eat a little more protein with each meal.

3. Keep a food diary to see what “extras” you’re eating

Extras – a chocolate bar here, larger portions – can sneak into your diet. To ensure that you’re sticking strictly to your diet, keep a food diary for a week or two.

4. Drink water and green tea to suppress your appetite

Drink more water and green tea. This ensures that you’re properly hydrated. Green tea will also suppress your appetite and help you to control cravings.

Most plateaus only last a couple of weeks. Follow the tips above, and you’ll soon be on track with your weight loss again.
