If you want to lose weight, don’t fall for every fad diet potion or gizmo out there. Here are 10 easy steps to get that scale moving in the right direction.

1. Drink lots of water. There are plenty of reasons to drink water: It fills you up so you won’t be tempted to eat junk food. Studies have shown that what we think of as hunger pangs are really the first signs of dehydration. Drinking water adds no calories and flushes wastes out of your body faster.

2. Get moving. Many experts say you need at least 30 minutes of exercise every day to keep the weight off. If your schedule is tight, you will be glad to know that you can do your exercise in three 10-minute sessions. However, if you have more time, do more. Make your walk a bit longer. It will push oxygen throughout your body, helping you to be more energized and calmer.

3. Eat healthy. There’s a reason salty and sugary snacks are called junk food. They do nothing good for your body. By eating protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables you are giving your body what it needs. By easing away from sugar and salt consistently, you will find your body really doesn’t crave them.

4. Find a new hobby. By learning a new skill, whether it’s knitting or snowboarding, you will keep your brain engaged on something other than food or the scale. You will have a new avenue for making friends and gain a whole new outlook on life.

5. Get enough sleep. Studies have shown that people really do need an average of eight hours of sleep. By shortchanging your sleep, you set yourself up for a lot of health and stress problems that you might try to solve with food.

6. Find a way to get rid of stress. We are all busy these days, with our families, our jobs and our homes. We all need to find ways to deal with the stress. Instead of turning to that bag of chips, try praying, meditating, deep breathing or yoga. Even a few minutes can make a big difference.

7. Get a support system. If you have a problem, whether or not it’s related to the scale, try talking it over with a spouse, a relative, a friend or a coworker. That other person may or may not be able to offer a solution but it’s always helpful to having someone to listen to your troubles. You will feel less isolated and less inclined to stress eating.

8. Be patient. Those extra pounds did not get there overnight. You won’t lose them overnight either. By losing weight gradually, you will avoid yo-yo dieting and be able to keep off the pounds for life.

9. See a doctor. While in general, weight problems are the result of bad eating and exercise habits, there is always a chance that there is an underlying medical problem. A doctor or other health professional will be able to determine whether are any other issues and also whether your body is ready for that new diet or exercise regimen.

10. Smile. Be confident that the small, common-sense changes you are making in your life are making a difference, a difference that will soon show on the scale and in the way your clothes fit. Your family, friends and coworkers will notice your new attitude and their feedback will make you feel even better about yourself.

By following these 10 easy weight-loss tips, you will be able to bypass the latest fads to shed pounds and keep them off.
