Quick weight loss: Is it possible?

Quick weight loss is everybody’s dream. Who wouldn’t want all those ugly pounds gone with the wave of a wand? However, while many programs and products that promise weight loss, are they worth considering?

The answer is: It depends. Here are some factors to consider.

1. How much weight do you want to lose and why? Do you just want to lose a few pounds so that you can fit into a special outfit for your class reunion? Or, are you just bloated from “that time of the month” or from overindulging over the holidays? Then, okay, you may benefit from a short-term quick weight-loss program, such as a juice fast.

2. How quick does quick have to be? If it’s Monday and you want to lose 20 lbs by Saturday, then you are undoubtedly setting an unrealistic goal. In that case it’s best to just invest in an outfit and hairstyle that fits well for how you look now.

On the other hand, if you don’t have short deadline but still want the pounds to come off quickly, there are many things you can do. Keep in mind, however, that experts still recommend you lose only five pounds or so the first week and one to two pounds per week after that. Here are some quick weight loss tips to follow.

1. Increase your exercise time and intensity. We all know exercise is good for you and that experts recommend exercising at least 30 minutes per day at moderate intensity. If you don’t do that already, start now. If you do exercise regularly, amp up your workout a bit: Try going 45 minutes. Or, if time is tight, try exercising more intensely: If you walk, try a few minutes of jogging instead. If you bike slowly, try going faster or add some hilly terrain.

2. Consider changing your workout. Studies have shown that your body can benefit by changing your workout style occasionally. If you love cardio workouts, try adding some weight training. If you do the same workout pattern (i.e., a set of crunches, then a set of upper arm work, then a walk, then a stretch etc.), try changing the order you do things or use a different workout. You will create what experts call “muscle confusion”, which will make your body work harder.

3. Drink more water. While there is some dispute as to whether we have to drink eight 8 oz glasses of water per day, it is clear that drinking more water does a lot to flush away the pounds. If for no other reason, drink water to help you feel full so you won’t be tempted to go for junk food.

4. Say no to second helpings and between meal snacks. Remember the old saying, “A moment on the lips, forever on the hips.” By simply not indulging in snacks or seconds, you will go a long way toward losing weight.

5. Only indulge in treats on special occasions. Back in the olden days, cakes, candy and other treats were just that ñ treats. They only had them on very rare occasions. If you need to reward yourself with something, pick something that is not food related. If you are trying to comfort yourself with food, instead try talking things over with a friend or getting your mind off your troubles with a long walk or another hobby.
