Weight loss pills are so seductive, aren’t they? Take one or two tiny pills and you don’t have to worry about diet or exercise. Should you try them?
Before you shell out your hard-earned cash for the latest pills, here are some things you should consider.
First of all, just because these products are on the market doesn’t mean they are effective. In many cases, the company that produces the weight-loss pill is only interested in lightening your wallet, not your belly. Quite often, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration orders weight-loss products off the market because of bogus claims made.
Secondly, weight-loss pills are not necessarily safe. For example, one prominently advertised weight-loss pill has been shown to cause diarrhea in some people. “So what?” you may think, “After all, diarrhea will help me lose weight, right?” Diarrhea can lead to dehydration and result in a host of medical problems. In addition, the long-term effects of some weight-loss pills are not known. Taking those pills now may lead to serious health problems down the road.
This is especially true if you are taking any other medications. Drug interactions can cause many medical problems. Why take the risk?
Third of all, weight-loss pills are not necessarily the answer. If you read the packaging on many of these products, you will notice there is a diet and exercise program enclosed. These programs are usually variations of the common-sense weight-loss tips we all know: eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water and exercise daily. Why not just follow the program and skip taking the pills?
There are many other avenues you can take in order to lose weight and lose it quickly. But they all boil down to the same thing: Eat less and/or exercise more. As long as you are burning more calories than you are taking in, you will lose weight.
If you truly have tried everything, and still cannot get your scale to budge in the right direction, see your doctor to be sure you don’t have an underlying medical problem. For example, some medications do make you retain water, thus keeping you from losing weight. It’s worth it to make sure you are healthy.

Here are some common sense ways to lose weight:
Skip junk food. Only eat cookies, candy and other treats on truly special occasions, such as your birthday or on a holiday.
Drink plenty of water. Some experts recommend taking your weight, divide that number in half for the amount of ounces of water you should drink daily. For example, if you weight 150 lbs, drink 75 oz of water. You will feel full and not as tempted to overeat.
Get moving for at least 30 minutes a day (and more if you can). Even three 10-minute brisk walks every day can work wonders. It’s also a great stress reliever. Also, check out exercise videos and classes.
Eat plenty of protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. These are the good things your body needs to be healthy.
Relax. If you are a stress eater, figure out a different way to tackle stress: talk to a friend, join a support group, take up a hobby, pray or meditate. There are countless ways to help you deal with your stress without food.
Finally, be patient with yourself. In the scheme of things the numbers on a scale are not all that important as long as you are eating healthy foods and exercising. If you are consistent, your clothes will soon fit better and you will feel and look your best.
