Your summer weight loss into fall

If your summer weight loss program has been going well, you may be wondering how to maintain that loss into fall and beyond. Here are some tips to help you make the transition smoothly.

If you’re a student or a parent of a school-age child, your routine may necessarily change once fall starts. This is actually a great time to assess your summer weight loss program. Think about what has worked for you. Also consider what hasn’t worked and determine how you can change it.

For example, if you’ve lost weight this summer because you’ve been taking part in all sorts of outdoor activities, which ones have you liked best? Is there an indoor version that you will enjoy just as much? Remember, there are now video game systems with popular sports, such as tennis and golf that you can do right in your living room. If you enjoy biking or jogging, perhaps you should consider buying an exercise bicycle or treadmill.

On the other hand, are there activities that you’ve tried but don’t really enjoy? For example, while running is a great way to lose weight, many people find it too hard on their knees. Maybe you can find an exercise video or a class that appeals to you instead. If you still want to be outdoors, try hiking or later, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.

If you are into team activities, join a basketball, volleyball or even a hockey team. By joining a group activity, you can stave off the mid-winter blues that many of us use as an excuse to overeat.

On the diet end of the weight loss equation, there are many things you can do. For example, freeze grapes and berries to have on hand as a cool winter treat. You can also find many stew and soup recipes that use plenty of vegetables. Some vegetarian chili recipes taste even better than traditional versions on a cold winter night.

If you are heading back to the classroom, take a few minutes each morning to pack some healthy snacks so you won’t be tempted by the vending machines or fast-food restaurants. Bring along a bottle of water. Many experts believe that those so-called hunger pangs may actually be the first signs of dehydration.

If you are a parent, it can be very tempting to serve fast-food for dinner instead of cooking a full meal. Avoid the temptation by planning ahead. If you know your family will be on the road to soccer games or school concerts, pack along a Thermos of soup and a container of sandwiches on whole grain bread. There are many containers on the market that will allow you to carry hot foods along easily. Find some easy, healthy recipes your family enjoys and make a picnic out of it.

If you are stressed by homework or by an overburdened schedule, don’t head to the kitchen: There’s nothing there that will solve your problem. Instead, take a short, brisk walk, or find a quiet place where you can take a few deep breaths. Once you are settled down, you will be better able to deal with the matter at hand.

The end of summer does not have to mean the end of weight-loss. With careful planning, you will be easily able to lose the pounds and keep them off.
