It seems as if everyone has weight loss tips, but it can be very hard to separate the good ones from the bad ones. Whose tips can you trust?
1. One very reliable source for weight-loss tips is the health-care industry. Visit several medical websites, such as WebMD, Healthline or Mayoclinic.com. These are well-respected sites known for making clear, unbiased information available to consumers. These sites are not trying to sell anything.
2. Another very reliable source is your doctor. He or she has many years of training in many issues, including weight and weight loss. Doctors can advise you as to healthy, common-sense eating and exercise plans to help you lose weight.
3. You can also get weight-loss tips at your library. The health and medicine section has many books on weight loss. Skim through some of them to see if the advice seems reasonable for your needs. However, if the book makes unreasonable claims (such as you will lose 10 lbs in a week if you eat only bananas), look elsewhere. Checking the library first will help you compare books before you buy them.
These are three great starting points to find weight-loss tips from trusted sources. So, whose tips should you stay away from?
1. Celebrities. Celebrities are paid a great deal of money to tell you about certain products. They may or may not have actually used the product they are hawking and may know little, if anything about them. Also, celebrities have paid staff to help them lose or maintain their weight.
2. General interest magazines. Magazine publishers know that weight-loss is a perennially hot topic. On the cover of every issue is a blurb touting the next great diet. While some of these are good, many of these weight-loss tips are just fads: the cabbage soup diet, the peanut diet, the cookie diet. By flipping the pages, you will undoubtedly see many ads for weight-loss products. These ads are how the magazine makes its money.
3. Diet product manufacturers. Weight loss is a multi-billion-dollar industry. Many diet supplements and exercise gizmos only exist to take your money. Unfortunately, the supplement industry is not well-regulated and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration only pulls such products from the market that are proven to have cause health problems, such as ephedra.
Common sense is always the best advice in losing weight. Remember the old adage: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If eating nothing but bananas will make you thin and healthy, why are there other foods on the market? Or if taking that little pill is all you need to lose weight, why are there any overweight people in the world? As always, shoot for a reasonable, sustained weight loss of one to two pounds per week in order to drop pounds and keep them off.
For those of us in reasonably good health, the same weight-loss tips will always be true: eat healthy food, limit junk food, drink plenty of fluids, exercise more and get the proper amount of sleep. These are really the only weight-loss tips anyone needs.
