Muslims fast from drinking, smoking and sex from dawn until sunset during the month of Ramadan to get closer to God by giving up things they enjoy. However, death by starvation rarely occurs from a quick weight-loss fast because the body signals an increased urge for food when fat levels are extremely low. People in good health with no chronic medical conditions can generally fast for several days with no adverse long-term effects, provided they have a healthy diet before and after the fast.

A short-term fast from food can not only bring about a quick weight loss, it can also foster a sense of spiritual well-being. When done under a doctor’s care, people can successfully lose weight through fasting.
