Eat Stop Eat: the "no diet" way to lose weight for good -- and keep it off

How to transition summer weight loss into winter weight loss

by angela.booth on October 18, 2008

Many people find summer weight loss to be much easier than winter weight loss. How do you keep on track as the weather turns colder? Here are some tips.

1. Continue with your eating plan. While it may be more difficult and more expensive to buy fresh fruits and vegetables during the fall and winter, you owe it to yourself to do so. Shop around for the best deals. Buy in quantities and freeze what you can, so you can have the taste of fresh produce all winter long.

2. Stay active. During the drab, cold days of winter, it may be tempting to just curl up inside instead of going on your daily jog. Push yourself to do it. Once you get moving, you may be surprised at how much better you feel. Make sure to dress appropriately for the weather. Get advice from a local sporting goods store as to the best way to dress for your activity.

3. Try something new. Winter weather may make your daily jog unpleasant, so this may be the time to try a different activity. If there is a recreation center in your area, consider attending exercise classes there. The center may have amateur or pickup basketball or volleyball games. Swim in an indoor pool to make sure the bathing suit still fits as it should. Get an exercise video so you can get a solid workout in the comfort of your own home.

4. Join a group. If you really enjoy walking or running, consider joining a walking or running club. These groups can help motivate you to keep going even in bad weather.
It’s a great way to make new friends and can give you something to look forward to each day.

5. Plan for the holidays. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s ñ all those holidays that focus on food are right around the corner. Think about how you will deal with those tricky occasions. There are several ways to do so. Perhaps you can give yourself permission to eat one serving of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving then stick to your routine on other days. Perhaps you can plan to ramp up your exercise routine on the days before and after the big holidays. Only you know what the best plan is for you.

6. Inspire yourself. If you’ve made a lot of progress in your summer weight loss program, take a picture of yourself in your bikini and post it on your refrigerator. You will think twice about getting a snack because you won’t want to negate all that hard work.

7. Practice meditation, prayer or yoga. These are all proven methods to relieve stress. Cabin fever can make anyone snappish. Take a few minutes each day for calming activities and you won’t be tempted to go to the cookie jar for comfort.

These are just some of the ways to transition your summer weight loss into winter weight loss. When the warm weather returns you will be happy to see that your body will be ready for warm weather fashions.
