Eat Stop Eat: the "no diet" way to lose weight for good -- and keep it off

Diet pills: Do you need weight loss pills?

by angela.booth on November 8, 2008

Weight loss pills, potions and other products are a multi-billion-dollar industry. So they must work, right? Should you use weight loss pills?

Weight loss pills come in many forms:

Diuretics or water pills are designed to help you eliminate excess water. They can be helpful for women to lose water weight gain during their periods. However, they must be used as directed. More is definitely not better in using diuretic weight loss pills.

Appetite suppressants are weight loss pills intended to take the edge of your appetite so you will eat less. Many of these can be beneficial because they can add fiber to your diet and thus improve digestion.

Metabolism boosters are weight loss pills designed to give you increased energy levels, thus allowing you to burn more fat and calories. People who are sensitive to caffeine should avoid these because metabolism boosters can lead to insomnia and irritability.

Carb blockers are intended to prevent carbohydrates, such as pasta, from being absorbed by your body. However, the jury is still out on whether these weight loss pills actually live up to the claims.

There are many weight-loss pills that combine these and other features. Before you buy any of them, take some time to go online and read product reviews, both the good ones and the bad ones. Read the list of ingredients to find out exactly what you are taking into your body.

Many weight-loss pills are very expensive: often $30 or more for a one-month supply, which you will have to refill. Before you fork out your hard-earned cash, try these simple, inexpensive steps instead:

1. Watch your eating habits. Try to eat only when you feel hungry: when there is a slight growl in your stomach and it has been three to four hours since your last meal. Think about what your body wants and eat just enough that you feel satisfied. Many people find it helpful to write down everything they eat over the course of a week.

2. Drink plenty of water. A good rule of thumb to tell whether you are drinking enough water is to look at your urine: If it is clear, you are well hydrated. If it is yellow in color, you need to drink more.

3. Get moving. Health experts recommend that everyone get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day. However, you should exercise more in order to lose weight. Try for 45 minutes to an hour. You don’t have to train for the Olympics, just take a brisk walk.

4. Cut out the junk food. Eat protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains with as little processing as possible. These are the foods your body needs to stay healthy, not cookies, chips or candy.

5. If you feel stressed or frustrated, do something about it. Try prayer, meditation, hypnosis or yoga to regain your sense of calm. Talk to someone about your issues. Don’t turn to food to solve your problems.

These five tips are far better than any weight loss pills. You will lose weight and be healthier without lining someone else’s pockets.
