Eat Stop Eat: the "no diet" way to lose weight for good -- and keep it off

Why not weight loss surgery?

by angela.booth on December 12, 2008

Weight-loss surgery is a very tempting proposition, isn’t it? Why not go to the hospital and have the doctor cut away all those extra pounds? Here are just a few of the reasons to reconsider weight loss surgery.

Pain: Surgery, any kind of surgery is painful. While you are likely to be put under anesthesia with weight loss surgery, sooner or later that anesthesia will wear off and you will experience pain. While it may be relieved by prescription or over-the-counter pain medications, chances are you will need to use them for several days, weeks or possibly even months.

Complications: Did you know the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery puts the death rate for gastric-bypass surgery (the most common type of weight-loss surgery) at between 1 in 1,000 and 1 in 200 surgeries? In addition, the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reported in one study that one in 10 patients developed complications within six months of the surgery. These complications include vomiting, diarrhea, infections, hernias and even respiratory failure. In rare cases, some weight loss surgery patients developed seizures and paralysis resulting from nutrition deficiency.

Relearning life skills: While any weight loss program involves changing habits and behaviors, weight loss surgery requires these changes be made in a drastic way. Weight loss surgery patients must immediately adjust their lives because they can only eat 3-oz meals and must take vitamin pills and other medications. Rather than relearning skills over time, weight-loss surgery patients must make them immediately.

Uncertain long-term success. While weight-loss surgery patients can lose up to 70 percent of their excess weight, studies have shown that typically they regain 20 to 25 percent of what they lost.

Cost: Most insurance does not cover the cost of weight-loss surgery, which ranges from $18,000 to $22,000 to cover the cost of anesthesia, the use of the hospital and the doctor’s fees. This does not include the cost of nutritional support, exercise plans and other behavior modification needs after the surgery. Also keep in mind that you may need cosmetic surgery to get rid of the excess flab. This additional surgery comes at least a year after the weight-loss surgery.

Don’t misunderstand: Gastric bypass and other weight-loss surgery can be very beneficial for those who are extremely obese and others who have serious medical reasons for losing the pounds quickly. Many people have saved their lives by undergoing gastric bypass surgery. However, for most of us, who want to lose weight for cosmetic reasons, it just is not a good idea.

Instead of weight-loss surgery, it is indeed far better to concentrate on the age-old methods: sensible diet, moderate exercise and plenty of water. It’s really not that difficult: simply cut down or eliminate junk food and second helpings, take a daily 30-minute walk and drink water whenever you feel thirsty. If you want to lose weight faster, ramp up your exercise to burn more calories. While it may not be a quick process, it is certainly safer.

Weight loss surgery is a nice dream but there are certainly safer and better ways to lose those extra pounds.
