Create your own weight loss system

If you are trying to drop pounds, it’s easy to be tempted by all the commercial weight-loss systems on the market. But by following a few simple steps, you can create your own weight loss system. Here’s how:

1. Create a goal. You can’t hit the target if you don’t have one. What do you want to accomplish with your weight loss system? To wear a size 6? To weigh 125 lbs? To reach an appropriate Body Mass Index (BMI)? Take some time to think about a realistic weight loss goal. Write it down.

2. Now, think about what is preventing you from reaching that goal. Do you head straight for the potato chips after work? Do you have a desk job and then sit in front of the television in the evening? Be absolutely honest with yourself: it is very likely you know what bad habits you have.

3. Consider what you can realistically do to correct those bad habits. These items will form the basis of your personal weight loss system. If your main problem is junk food, commit yourself to buying only healthy foods and snacks. If you consider yourself a stress eater, figure out a way to use up that adrenaline in exercise. If you are wound up after work or school, use that time to go on a brisk walk or use one of those exercise DVDs that have been collecting dust on your shelf.

4. Recruit a friend. Studies have shown that weight loss systems work better when friends band together. Friends keep each other accountable and can help when life throws the inevitable curveball. Arrange to meet once a week — in person, by phone or by email — to talk about your successes and failures.

5. Make it fun. If you add a little spice to your weight-loss program, you will be more likely to stay with it. If you want to exercise more, figure out the mileage to your dream vacation and then go there when you’ve walked the same distance on your treadmill. If you created a weight-loss system with a friend, you may be able to create a friendly contest: The first one to reach the goal gets the gift card you both purchased. (Bear in mind that some people are too competitive for such a contest to work.)

6. Keep a log. Record your beginning weight, your weekly weight, your exercise activity and exactly what you eat and drink each day. Research has shown that the simple act of recording these facts consistently helps people reach their weight loss goal. Buy an attractive notebook that you can take wherever you go. It will keep you true to your weight loss system.

7. Consult a doctor if you need help. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, your weight loss system won’t work in the way you expect. If your weight is truly refusing to budge, despite your honest and sincere efforts, make an appointment today.
