What happens at a weight loss clinic?

by angela.booth on December 22, 2008

There are countless weight-loss clinics around. If you are trying to get thinner, you may be tempted to visit one or more of these clinics. Here are some tips as to what to look for on your free consultation visit to a weight-loss clinic.

Most weight-loss clinics are set up in shopping centers or medical offices. Depending on local regulations, they are required to meet licensing and health code requirements in addition to local business laws. Expect to see a clean, neat, professional medical facility similar to any doctor’s office.

Once you are taken into the consultation room, a weight-loss clinic representative will probably ask you several questions about yourself, your weight-loss goals etc. Then he or she will probably give you a tour of the weight-loss clinic and explain key parts of the program. Listen carefully and consider whether the program’s tenets are practices you can realistically use.

As you tour the weight-loss clinic, pay attention to what you see and hear. Do you see other weight-loss clinic patients? Do they seem happy? If you can, try to ask them how they like the program and how much they’ve lost so far.

Also notice the weight-loss clinic’s staff. Do they seem professional, confident and caring? Notice their name tags ñ are they true medical professionals. That is, are they registered or licensed practical nurses (RNs or LPNs), medical assistants (MAs) or Physician’s Assistants (PAs)? These positions required at least some medical training. On the other hand, a nurse aide can be simply hired off the street with no medical training and may not know the first thing about clinical practice.

Be sure to notice the quality of the equipment: Do the scales shriek? Are there medical records in plain view? Are medical (such as blood sampling equipment) and other wastes disposed of properly?

You may not be able to get all of these questions answered during your first visit. However, you should be able to determine whether this is a high quality weight-loss clinic or a fly-by-night organization. Is this a place you would enjoy visiting week after week?

At some time during your first visit to a weight-loss clinic, you will be given cost and financing information. Read over the information carefully and be sure you understand it before you sign on the dotted line. The fine print may reveal several unpleasant facts about what happens if you try to cancel your membership or if you miss a payment.

A reputable program will allow you to take home the materials to read them over on your own. However, if the clinic’s staff pressures you to sign immediately, do everything in your power to walk away from such a deal. Be polite but be firm. You do not want to be taken for a ride.

Don’t misunderstand, weight-loss clinics can provide excellent support for those who need a weekly one-on-one visit with a medical professional in order to stick with the program. However, weight-loss clinics exist to earn money for its owners, just like any other business. Unfortunately, many exist only to hoodwink unsuspecting clients out of hundreds and even thousands of dollars. It pays to be wary.

Choose a weight-loss clinic that is professional, reasonably priced and that meets your needs and you will lose weight.
