How to stick with a weight-loss system

Starting a weight-loss system is an exciting, yet scary venture. You want to believe that it will work this time, but you’re afraid that once the novelty has worn off, you will quit. How do you keep on track with a weight-loss system?

1. Read all the materials for the weight loss system carefully. Make sure you understand every portion of the program ñ diet, exercise and support. The better you understand the program, the more likely that you will follow it.

2. Take advantage of all support functions for the weight-loss system. There may be online forums, message boards, live chat, weekly meetings, newsletters etc. Look into what’s offered and use them ñ you’ve paid for them in your registration costs. They won’t do you any good unless you use them.

3. Develop your own support system. If you have a friend or family member using the same weight-loss system, touch base with him or her on a regular basis. The saying, “there’s safety in numbers,” is true. You can support each other through this new program and likely lose more weight — and keep it off ñ than you would have by going it alone.

4. Give yourself a deadline. Some exercise videos and other weight-loss systems say you will see results in X number of days. Tell yourself you will commit to the program until a certain date. When you see an end in sight, it will be easier to stick with the program. When you hit that target date, consider whether the results were worth the effort. If they were, set a new target date and keep going. If not, consider what went wrong and determine whether you want to try again.

5. Make it fun. Make a game of the weight loss system. Plan a reward for yourself for keeping with it. Promise yourself a new exercise wardrobe if you’ve stuck to your workout for a full month. Get that piece of jewelry you’ve had your eye on if you’ve followed the eating plan. Get a smaller sized outfit when you’ve hit a weight-loss goal.

6. Stick with one weight loss system. There is a lot of weight-loss advice out there. It may be tempting to pick and choose among the many tips available. It’s best to stick with just one program to avoid getting sidetracked by conflicting opinions. If you are torn between two or more programs and worry about choosing the wrong one ñ don’t. The good programs will still be there if you’ve decided you’ve made the wrong choice.

7. Don’t obsess. A weight-loss system is supposed to be just one part of your life. It is not supposed to be your entire life. Follow each part of the program as best you can and move on to the rest of your day. Life is too short to be constantly worrying about what you are eating or drinking.

Sticking with a weight-loss system is possible. Just follow these seven steps persistently and you will soon have the body you’ve longed for.
