Do you want quick weight loss? Do you want to wake up one morning and suddenly find out all those excess pounds are gone? Sure. We all do. Fortunately, the essential secret to quick weight loss is readily available and does not require diet pills, powders, surgery or gizmos.

The secret to quick weight loss is: keep moving.

I found out this secret to quick weight loss when I was hired as a nurse’s aide at our local hospital. For 12 hours, two nights per week, I was kept hopping: seeing to patient needs, moving beds and doing whatever the nurses asked me to do. I rarely sat during my shift.

Sure, I was tired at the end of those 12 hours. However, I soon noticed that those jeans that had been getting slightly tight were suddenly fitting a lot better. My husband started making comments about my quick weight loss. As my body adjusted to the midnight shift, I felt stronger and more energetic.

All this happened without any real change in my diet — at first. However, as time went on, I noticed that I really did not crave junk food as I used to. When the other staff members collected money for a midnight run to the only fast-food joint that was open late, I passed, opting instead for the healthier fare I had packed myself.

This experience proved to me what health care and fitness experts have been saying all along: quick weight loss can come if you change your habits and get more active. Here are some tips to get you started without having to find a grueling 12-hour midnight shift.

1. Park as far away from your destination as is reasonable.

2. Exercise every day. While experts recommend 30 minutes of moderate exercise for good health, quick weight loss will happen if you aim for an hour of daily exercise. Try a brisk walk, an exercise video or one of the new exercise-related video games.

3. Distract yourself from food. Get out of the kitchen and away from the television and do something you’ve been meaning to do, such as deep cleaning your home or working in the garden. Put on your favorite music to help you along. Quick weight loss will come with a bonus: that task you’ve been putting off will get done.

4. Sign up for a half-marathon walk. Half-marathon walks have been becoming more popular in recent years and are great for quick weight loss. While a full marathon is 26.2 miles and takes an extensive amount of preparation time, a 13.1-mile half-marathon is much more easily attainable. There are many half-marathon training programs online which will prepare you for the big event in as little as three months.

5. Learn something new. Take up a new hobby or learn a new job skill that requires attention to detail. Chances are, you will be too preoccupied to think about what’s in the vending machines or to crave chocolate. You will be amazed at your quick weight loss.

Quick weight loss does not necessarily mean fad diets or risky behaviors. To drop pounds quickly and easily, just keep moving.
