Eat Stop Eat: the "no diet" way to lose weight for good -- and keep it off

Fasting for Weight Loss: Dieting Myths and Tips

by angela.booth on March 4, 2009

Want to lose weight quickly? Without doubt, the easiest and quickest way is by fasting: that is, by eliminating food completely for 24 hours or so, and doing it regularly. People have fasted for religious reasons for thousands of years, but is it safe?

There are many myths around fasting, but as Brad Pilon, the nutritionist and author of the Eat Stop Eat diet found, they’re just that: myths.

Fasting Myth: You’ll Lose Muscle Mass

This is incorrect. When you stop eating, your body burns fat as fuel. in starvation, when all fat reserves are burned up, then the body burns muscle. However, in short fasts of 24 to 48 hours, you burn fat.

Fasting Myth: Fasting Alters Your Metabolism

Fasting has no effect on metabolism, which is predicated by your body mass, and exercise. So fasting will neither slow or speed your metabolism.

Fasting Myth: You Become Dizzy and Light-headed

This is another myth. You’ll feel great during a short fast of 24 hours or so. Indeed, many happy fasters fast on days when they need to be highly productive, because they get more done.

With the three fasting myths out of the way, let’s look at two tips which will help you to fast for weight loss.

Fasting Tip: Fast Just Once a Week at First

Start slowly, by fasting just one day a week. You’ll find that you’ll lose weight, and will soon be converted to the fasting lifestyle. One day a week is doable for anyone, and once you experience how great you feel, all your doubts about fasting will be gone.

Fasting Tip: Break Your Fast With a Snack

Once your fast is over, have a light snack. Then have a full meal. Your body has had a rest, and a chance to restore and repair itself, so start the digestion process slowly.
