The idea of a weight loss clinic is very appealing, isn’t it? Go to a doctor’s office and get a shot or a pill to quickly and easily burn fat. It’s a doctor’s office, so it must be safe and effective, right?
Well, not exactly. While most weight loss clinics are professionally run and meet the highest standards for health and safety, unfortunately, there are many fly-by-night organizations out there.
If you are eager to lose weight and are tempted to sign up with a weight loss clinic, think about these questions first.
1. How much weight do you want to lose? If you need to lose a significant amount of weight, especially for serious health reasons, then a reputable weight loss clinic may be helpful.
2. Why do you want to lose weight? Again, if you have serious medical reasons for wanting to lose weight, then consulting a physician in a weight-loss clinic may be the best option for you. However, if you only want to lose weight for the sake of appearance, you may have other options.
3. What weight loss methods have you tried? Have you tried simply controlling portion size, eliminating junk food and exercising daily? If so, what results did you see? How long did you try these methods? If you have really given common sense tips a serious try, then consider visiting a weight-loss clinic.
4. How did you hear about the weight-loss clinic? Do you know someone who is or was a patient of the clinic? Did you only see an advertisement with an amazing offer? Remember, ads were invented to attract your attention and often contain promises that can’t be kept.
5. Have you visited the weight-loss clinic? Was the facility convenient to your job, school or home? Did it have convenient hours? Was the facility clean and well-kept? Did the staff seem truly professional and caring? Did you see other patients? Did they appear to be happy with the clinic?
6. What do you know about the medical staff? The term clinic implies qualified medical professionals are on hand. Did you meet a doctor who regularly works at the facility? Where did he or she go to school? What other qualifications does he or she have? What methods does he or she use? What about other staff members? Are they nurses, medical assistants, physician assistants? What do you know about them?
7. What did the weight-loss clinic staff tell you? How much will clinic services cost? Does insurance cover the procedure you want? What extra charges may be involved? What happens if you must discontinue using the facility (because of a job change or other circumstances)? Will you get your money back? How safe is the program or procedure? What medical risks are there?
Once you’ve visited the weight-loss clinic, go online and read about the specific clinic as well as about the specific program or procedure. Then consider carefully whether the program is truly right for you.
Weight loss clinics can be truly beneficial to those who are severely overweight. However, be sure to weigh the costs, risks and benefits carefully before signing on the dotted line.
