If you’ve been battling with your weight for any length of time, you may be tempted to try a weight-loss clinic. How do you decide if it’s right for you, or if you should go it alone? Here are seven questions to answer.
1. How much weight do you need to lose? A weight-loss clinic is usually intended for those who are medically considered to be obese (at least 20 percent over their ideal weight). If you need to lose that much weight, having medical supervision may be the way to go.
2. Why do you want to lose weight? If you want to lose weight simply to look good or to get ready for a special event, then you don’t really need a weight-loss clinic. Clinics usually have fairly intensive programs, requiring regular appointments and detailed charts of your progress.
3. Are you shy or independently-minded? Weight-loss clinics work best for people who don’t mind sharing their struggles with a trusted medical professional. They also work best for people who are committed to following the program and won’t “go their own way” between appointments. If you are prone to “fudging” your weekly reports in order to look good for the clinic staff, you would be better off trying something else.
4. Do you have insurance? Some health insurance policies will cover the cost of weight-loss clinic programs if you have a diagnosis from your doctor that shows you need such a program. If you don’t have insurance, you should carefully consider whether you can afford a weight-loss clinic.
5. What other weight-loss methods have you tried? Have you tried merely watching what you eat and getting more exercise? Have you tried health clubs or classes, support groups, videos or books? Many of these may offer solutions you want at a far lower cost. If you have tried these other means, why didn’t they work for you? Carefully consider your answers. They will help you determine whether a clinic is right for you.
6. What do you know about the specific weight-loss clinic? If you are interested in a particular clinic, be sure to take a tour of the facility. Is it clean and attractive? Does the program seem reasonable? Do the staff members answer your questions clearly? Are they true medical professionals (doctors and nurses) or are they merely salespeople wearing white lab coats? Do you know anyone who’s actually gone to the clinic? Did they lose weight and keep it off? Were they happy with clinic services?
7. Can you continue with the program for life? The best weight-loss program is one that teaches you how to lose weight and keep it off for the rest of your life. A reputable weight-loss clinic will help you succeed even after your program has ended.
While we all want to lose weight quickly and easily, going to a weight-loss clinic may or may not be the best option for you. Take your time and carefully read the clinic’s materials, especially the contract. A reputable weight-loss clinic can be a key ally in your battle of the bulge.
