Eat Stop Eat: the "no diet" way to lose weight for good -- and keep it off

Weight loss journal: what your perfect journal should contain

by angela.booth on June 8, 2009

You can find weight loss journals in many places: in stores, online or even among spare notebooks you have on hand. Why not take a day to compare the various types?

Here are some details to look for:

Look at the bindings: do they seem sturdy? Remember, you may be turning the pages several times a day, so it has to stand up to good use.

Look at the cover: Is it reasonably attractive? Is it a cover that you will still like six to eight months from now? While you might like the funny cartoon today, you may find it annoying or embarrassing in a few months. Is the cover one that you could take to work or school situations without embarrassment?

Look at the size of the journal? Does it seem big enough to attract your attention and prompt you to use it? Is it small enough that you will carry it wherever you need to use it?

If possible, look inside the journal. If it is specifically a weight-loss journal, does it seem easy to use? Does it show you how to calculate calories, fat grams, carbohydrates etc.? Does it have a space for you to write down your exercise routine, including time and intensity? Is there a space for you to write down factors such as mood, events that affect your weight-loss plan etc? Are there tips to help you in your efforts?

If you are considering an electronic version, such as a PDA: Try the controls. Are they easy to use? Is there a stylus that is likely to get lost easily? Is the device secure? If it has a password function, will you remember the password? Are the batteries easy to replace? Can it link to your computer? Is the software compatible? Is the device made by a well-respected company?

Again, look at the price. Is there a journal comparable to the one you are considering that is less expensive? What is the difference between the two? Do these differences justify the higher cost? Is it likely another copy of the journal will be available when you’ve filled up your copy?

Once you have narrowed your search down, go online and look for product reviews for your top choices. You may find that others have good reasons for preferring or rejecting specific products.

In addition, use your favorite search engine and look for the journals you are considering. You may find out from someone’s blog or website that he or she had a particularly good experience with a particular journal. Such information is good to know when making your choice.

Also, ask your friends if they use a weight-loss journal. Which ones do they use and why? Do they like it? Do they use it consistently? Why or why not?

While these are good factors to consider when choosing a weight-loss journal, don’t overdo it. Don’t spend so much time comparing products that you never get around to buying or using one. It’s not rocket science, it’s just a notebook.
