Weight loss diets can easily become an obsession. You spend every waking moment of your life focused on every bite of food you take and how many calories, fat grams, carbohydrates they contain.
While sensible diets can help you drop pounds, being so hyper-focused on them can add stress to your life. If you are a “stress-eater”, it can actually tempt you into eating more, rather than less.
It may be a wiser move for you to add a new hobby, either in addition to your new diet or as an alternative. Here are some suggestions.
1. Try a new craft. If your weakness is to sit in front of the TV mindless munching away on a bowl of chips, try knitting, crocheting or some other craft that involves using your hands. It keeps you busy and you’ll find you won’t want to put it down to go get any munchies.
2. Add a video game. Video games are a great form of entertainment. There are plenty of games that encourage you to get off the couch and get moving. Even traditional games are a great way to get your mind off your troubles (and off of food). Look online at the variety of games available and invest in a system that has the games that interest you the most.
3. Join a group. So often weight loss feels like a go-it-alone proposition, when it really doesn’t have to be. There are so many ways to get involved. Find a group that matches your interests and join in. It doesn’t have to be a group about weight loss. Anything that gets you meeting other people can be a great distraction from food and diets. Heck, it doesn’t even have to be a physical group ñ there are plenty of ways to meet people online.
4. Volunteer. Getting involved in a charitable cause is an incredible way to get your mind off your troubles. Once you get involved in a community project and see what’s going on beyond your own little world, you may find you don’t care so much if you gained or lost half a microgram.
5. Do your chores. Take a look at your to-do list and find those projects you keep putting off. Figure out what’s holding you back from getting them done. Plan out the project and then roll up your sleeves and get to work. You’ll feel proud of yourself for your accomplishment. You may be able to get your family involved too: There’s nothing like a group project to foster closeness.
6. Take a hike. When you find you are needlessly obsessing over your diet, get up and take a brief, brisk walk. The physical exertion will help you to clear your mind and distract you. You’ll get an oxygen rush to your brain and feel a lot less stressed.
Weight-loss diets can work if they are sensible and if you do not become obsessed with them. Follow these suggestions and not only will you lose weight, but you will have a richer, happier life.
