There are countless ads out there touting the perfect weight-loss system. But do you really need a complete system to help you drop a few pounds?
The answer, of course, depends on many factors.
1. How much weight do you want to lose? If you only want to lose weight so your clothes will fit a little better, then you don’t really need such a convoluted system. Simply cut back on the snacks and the junk food. Add a few more minutes of exercise each day. You’ll look and feel better in no time.
On the other hand, if you have a great deal of weight to lose, you will need to do more than correct a few bad habits. You may need to change a lot of things in your life. Look for a system that addresses all aspects of healthy bodies: diet, exercise and emotional well-being.
2. Why do you want to lose weight? Again, if you are preparing for a special event (such as a wedding or a class reunion) and want to lose 10 lbs or less, simply consider where those bad habits have crept in and attack them consistently.
However, if you need to lose a lot of weight for medical reasons (such as upcoming surgery), then consider finding a complete program ñ perhaps even a doctor-supervised one. A more intense program may be what you need to lose the weight and keep it off for good.
3. What is your personality? We’ve all purchased weight-loss books that sound simple at first but end up being very confusing. They require you to measure calories, fat grams, carbohydrates, glycemic index numbers, fluid ounces, exercise duration and intensity etc. By the time you finish recording all that data, you’re more stressed than when you started and end up drowning your sorrows with a milk shake!
If you want something simple, just use your common sense. You know what foods are bad and good for you. You know what exercise you can and will do. You know what your schedule is like. On the other hand, if you are interested in nutrition and exercise science, read up on the more detailed programs. The added information just may keep you interested in how your body is changing.
4. How’s your budget? The more complicated the program, the more expensive it is likely to be. If you go to a clinic, remember that the staff needs salaries, the materials have to be ordered and the clinic’s rent must be paid. That’s where your money goes when you pay for a program. If you need to watch your pennies, maybe there’s a more economical method out there.
On the other hand, there is something in the adage, “You get what you pay for.” If you undoubtedly know the system is top notch, gets superior results and that you will follow it faithfully, it may be worth the investment. You’ll be paid back in a longer life with better health.
Choosing to use a formal weight-loss system is highly personal. Consider these factors carefully and make the best decision for you and your health.
