The 3-Day Diet is a tempting proposition. Wouldn't you love to lose all the weight you wanted in the space of a long weekend? Well, you might not be able to lose all the weight you need to, but you can get a great start with this plan, if you are careful.

The 3-Day Diet, also known as the Cleveland Clinic Diet after the facility that was mistaken believed to have created it, is a very low calorie diet intended for very fast weight loss. People who have followed the diet have claimed to lose 10 lbs over the course of the diet.

As you may expect, the diet is very strict. In addition to the foods listed below, dieters must drink four cups of water or non-calorie beverages each day.

On day one, for breakfast, you can drink coffee or tea with artificial sweeteners, a half grapefruit or grapefruit juice and a slice of toast with one tablespoon of peanut butter. For lunch, you may have one half cup of tuna, a slice of plain toast and another cup of coffee or tea with artificial sweetener. For dinner you may have 3 ounces of lean meat or chicken, 1 cup of green beans, 1 cup of carrots, 1 apple and a cup of vanilla ice cream.

The second day is similarly very restricted: For breakfast, you may have coffee or tea (again with artificial sweetener), one egg, half of a banana and a slice of plain toast. For lunch, you may have one cup of cottage cheese or tuna and eight saltine crackers. For dinner, you may have two beef hot dogs, 1 cup of broccoli or cabbage, a half cup of carrots, half of a banana and a half cup of vanilla ice cream.

On the third day, for breakfast you may have coffee or tea with artificial sweeteners, five saltine crackers, 1 oz of cheddar cheese and an apple. For lunch, you may have coffee or tea (with artificial sweeteners), a boiled egg and a slice of toast. For dinner, you may have a cup each of tuna, carrots, cauliflower and melon and a half-cup of vanilla ice cream.

Most medical experts feel that the weight lost during the 3-Day Diet is water weight that is quickly regained once the diet is finished. That's because the diet is particularly low in carbohydrates, which encourage the body to retain water. In order to keep the pounds off, it is best to slowly add whole grains and other carbohydrates back into your diet. You should also resist the urge to pig out on your favorite junk food when you come off the diet.

Many experts note that the diet has no provision for exercise.

In general, you should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily in order to maintain your weight and more exercise if you need to lose weight. While you may be too tired and weak when you are on a low-calorie diet to exercise, you should definitely exercise when you have returned to a more normal eating pattern.

The 3-day Diet is an easy and fast success plan for losing weight, as long as you work to maintain that success afterward.
