2. Drink water. Water hydrates your body and helps to flush out fat and toxins. How much water should you drink? Another rule of thumb is to watch your urine output: if it is pale to clear in color, you’re drinking enough water. If it is yellow or golden, drink more water.
3. Cut out the junk food. While we like to tell ourselves we need or deserve chocolate, chips, ice cream etc., we don’t really. By cutting out these treats, we leave more room in the diet for healthy foods, like fruit and vegetables. Remember that cookies, candy etc. are intended to be treats for truly special occasions, so save them for rare celebrations. You’ll be healthier for it.
4. Get plenty of sleep. Studies have shown that those who sleep for six hours or less each night tend to have a higher Body Mass Index (BMI) than those who sleep longer. BMI is the ratio between one’s weight and height. Someone who has a BMI above 25 is considered overweight. If you think you are too busy to get the recommended eight hours each night, consider what activities you can leave out. Getting enough sleep offers many other health benefits in addition to healthy weight loss.
5. Pray or meditate to handle stress. Many of us are stress eaters: When the going gets tough we turn to the cookie jar. However, studies have also shown that people who pray or meditate are calmer in general and are better able to cope with day-to-day stresses. The next time you feel stressed, take just a minute to close your eyes, take a deep breath and say a prayer (either a familiar one such as the Lord’s Prayer or your own spontaneous prayer) or conjure up a calming picture in your mind, such a serene lakefront landscape.
