Eat Stop Eat: the "no diet" way to lose weight for good -- and keep it off

Weight Loss Patch: a Solution for Diets That Don’t Work?

by angela.booth on January 11, 2010

The weight loss patch seems to be a great innovation: Who wouldn’t want to lose weight by simply wearing a patch similar to a band-aid? Are weight-loss patches a remedy for failed diets?

First, here is a little about how weight-loss patches work. The patches usually contain Guarana,

Garcinia, Chromium or other ingredients that help cut your appetite or increase your metabolism. Some products claim to enhance your mood in order to eliminate stress eating.

The idea is that these ingredients are more effective when they are absorbed through the skin than taken by mouth. The patches are usually worn on the arm, the stomach or the back and changed daily. Most patch manufacturers require their products to be worn at least a month before results can be seen.

Like many other weight-loss pills and potions, there have been dubious claims made about weight loss patches. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has fined many patch manufacturers for making false and inflated claims about the product. These products typically cost between $20 and $50 per box, so there is a lot of money to be made and lost by these products.
In addition, it’s important to be aware that other patch-based medications, such as contraceptives, are not recommended for overweight individuals because the ingredients do not absorb as well. Some ingredients may actually interfere with other medications.

It’s important to know that weight loss patches are not the only thing you’ll ever need to lose weight, despite some manufacturers’ claims. Many dieters don’t know that the ingredients in the patch move better through the body if you are well hydrated. You will see better results the more water you drink. Further, the patches usually come with an exclusive diet plan that involves calorie-restricted meals. Once the user stops taking the patch and following the diet, the weight comes right back on.

If the directions for a weight-loss patch include drinking more fluids and eating properly, perhaps it would be more sensible (and cheaper) to simply follow those steps and skip the patch. You will lose weight because you are taking in fewer calories and flushing fat out of your system. You don’t even have to stick to a formal diet plan, simply resolve to eliminate junk food and stick to eating lean protein, whole grains, fruit and vegetables. Add some exercise (even 30 minutes of walking each day will help) and you’ll soon watch the pounds drop off.

As to the mood-enhancing claims, there are better ways to eliminate stress eating. For example, those 30 minutes of walking have also been shown to be a significant way to ease depression and anxiety and to elevate mood. There are also the time-honored methods of praying, meditating and/or talking to a friend in order to relieve stress.

Face it, if you could really lose weight by simply sticking a weight-loss patch on your arm, why are there still overweight people in the world?

Using a weight-loss patch is a dream that has not yet become true. Save your money and use common sense before falling for another weight-loss product claim.
