Diet Tips: 5 Tips for Eating out and Socializing

by angela.booth on April 6, 2010

Diet tips are important for any weight-loss plan. You need to know how to keep to the plan without letting it completely run your life. Here are five diet tips that will work with any weight loss plan, yet still allow you to eat out and socialize.

1. Relax. For most of us, eating out is a special occasion, so treat it as such. Pick out one treat that you only enjoy on rare occasions. When it arrives, savor it slowly. This will help you to avoid feeling deprived while the rest of the people at your table are eating what they like. You’ll have more fun if you aren’t mentally counting carbs, fat grams or food exchanges. Your companions will too.

2. Plan in advance. If you know what restaurant you will go to, call ahead or search online for the menu. Ask about healthy menu choices (most of the larger chains know that people are concerned about healthy eating and offer tasty choices). Resolve to choose one of those items rather than the high-fat grease burger and you can have fun without feeling guilty.

If you’re going to a potluck, make your dish from one of the many new healthy recipes you’ve collected. This will ensure there is something at the party for you to eat. Chances are, you’ll get plenty of requests for the recipe, so you can help other people eat healthier too.

3. Avoid the bread basket and the alcohol. This is one of the most comment diet tips, because it’s true. If you are greeted with a bread basket or nacho plate, ask the wait staff to remove it immediately. These can sabotage your diet quicker than almost anything else, especially if you use butter or dipping sauce.

Likewise, alcohol is not a good idea if you are trying to lose weight. Most alcoholic drinks have a lot of calories. Instead, stick with water or a diet soda. If you feel you must have just one drink, try a wine spritzer in club soda. You’ll get the taste without the guilt.

4. Concentrate on your companions. While food is an important part of any social gathering, it is far less important than the people you are with. You can’t get to know people if you are busy shoveling food in your face. Rather than eating an appetizer, use the time to catch up with your significant other, your friends or your coworkers. Try to find out at least one thing about each of them that you didn’t know before.

5. Get half of your food to go. This is one of the best diet tips because it helps you to save money and lose weight at the same time. When you place your order, ask for a doggie bag. When the food arrives, immediately place half of your meal in the bag. You’ll have a tasty lunch the next day and a reminder of the fun you had the night before.

Follow these diet tips to ensure you’ll have a good time and still lose weight. Have fun.
