The 4 day diet was created by Dr. Ian Smith, a physician also known for his stint on the TV show Celebrity Fit Club. The diet plan is not what you may expect: You do not lose a tremendous amount of weight followed by three days in which you gorge yourself. Instead, you follow seven mini weight-loss plans over the course of a month. Each module lasts four days; hence each module is a 4 day diet.
The first module is called the induction phase: Dieters eat fruit, non-starchy vegetables, beans, rice and non- or low-fat dairy products. They don’t eat meat, fish or poultry and only very small amounts of fat.
The following two modules add other foods to this induction phase: fiber, then protein. In the fourth phase you are given a little freedom to eat foods you like, including pizza. The fifth and seventh modules are more restrictive to give you that final push to meat your goals while the sixth is less so, presumably to help you adjust to eating in real life. Each module of the diet has exercise recommendations and encourages journaling to help keep to the program.
While many people have lost weight on Dr. Smith’s diet, some medical experts have criticized it, saying some of the modules are too restrictive and don’t offer a reasonable amount of calories or nutrients essential to health. However, they have praised the program for its focus on healthy food.
One benefit of this type of diet is its variety: You only follow each module for four days, so it doesn’t get monotonous. If one module gets tough, by the end of the week you will be on a different module. In addition, the modules alternate between restrictive and varied, so you can mentally psych yourself up as you approach each one.
If you like the idea of a 4 day diet but don’t think you would succeed on Dr. Smith’s program, you can create your own version: From Monday through Thursday, follow a restricted diet of only protein, fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Eliminate snacks and second helpings. Only drink water, juice and nonfat dairy. Fridays through Sundays, give yourself more freedom: allow yourself one indulgence each day, have seconds of a dish you really enjoy. Go ahead and have popcorn or candy when you go to the show.
This kind of 4-day diet will allow you to control your eating without it controlling you.
