Lose Weight NOW: 25 Days to Weight Loss, Day 6

by angela.booth on June 7, 2010

Welcome to day six of our 25 Days to Weight Loss program.

If you missed a day, you’ll always find the complete program on this page.

Now that we’re on the second week, you’re probably very excited to see some results. If you’ve been following our program, you may have lost as many as five pounds already. If you haven’t, you may be wondering about weight loss supplements and whether they’d help you reach your goal quicker.

You are probably inundated with offers for weight loss supplements: There are ads for them on television, on the radio, in magazines and online. While some of them do actually work, there are some important things to keep in mind.

1. They only work as long as you take them. If you forget to buy a new box when you run out, or if the product is unavailable temporarily, you are likely to gain back all the weight you might have lost on it.

2. The products may not work at all. Despite all the hype, there are very few, if any, proven weight-loss supplements. And those before and after photos? It’s amazing what digital photography can do. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does regulate the marketing of drugs, the FDA’s Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994 exempted a variety of plants, oils, and vitamins from that scrutiny.

3. Even weight loss supplements that are approved by the FDA are not necessarily safe. Recently the FDA issued a warning that Alli, also known as Orlistat or Xenical, could put some people at risk for liver injury.

4. Weight loss supplements can be expensive. Some products can cost as much as $50 for a 30-day supply. Imagine what you can do with $600 a year if you weren’t using that money for diet pills.

5. Weight loss products may interfere with other medications. If you have a chronic health condition, such as diabetes or heart problems, using a diet pill is not a great idea.
6. You don’t know the long term effects of using weight loss supplements. Because the FDA doesn’t regulate many so-called natural diet remedies, it may be impossible to determine whether those remedies could affect your health down the road. Is losing a few pounds now worth the risk of developing cancer in later years? Or infertility?

7. Most weight loss supplements come with a diet plan that must be followed if you want to see the advertised results. If you read the diet plan, you will easily figure out that it’s the diet plan that is causing you to lose weight, not the product itself. (It’s hard not to lose weight if you are limited to eating half of a grapefruit for breakfast, a container of yogurt for lunch and a chicken breast and small plain salad for dinner.)

As you can see, while weight loss supplements are tempting, they are not the wisest choice. You can lose weight and keep it off by following a truly sensible eating plan. Save your money and your health ñ stay away from the supplements.
