Welcome to day 10 of our 25 days to weight loss.
It’s time to talk about your weight loss workout. We hope you’ve been walking for 30 minutes a day most days. But there are other types of exercise you may want to consider.
Most health experts say you should incorporate three types of exercise: aerobic (or cardio) exercise, strength training and stretching.
Aerobic (cardio) exercise gets the heart pumping efficiently and moves oxygen into the muscles and tissues. It also helps you to burn off excess fat and calories. In addition to walking, other aerobic exercise include running, jogging, dancing and swimming.
Strength training involves working various muscles to make the stronger and more durable. The result is better bone density and joint function, lower ìgoodî cholesterol levels and, obviously, stronger muscles. Strength training can be performed with dumbbells, weight machines and/or resistance bands. You may also do isometric exercises, in which the various muscles of the body resist each other and thereby become stronger.
Stretching makes the muscles more flexible and can also help them become longer and leaner. Stretching is also a great way to warm up before a workout or relax after a workout (or after a hard day). Yoga, Pilates and static athletic stretches are all great ways to stretch your body.
Every body is different and so your weight loss workout will likely be different than everyone else’s.
Fortunately there are many options for you to build your own weight loss workout. For example:
If you are already walking for 30 minutes a day, try ramping it up by adding a minute or two of jogging during that session. This will help you to burn more calories and build strength and endurance.
Sign up for a weight loss workout that has always intrigued you. If you are uncertain about it, ask if you can try one session before signing up.
Try one of the many weight loss workout DVDs on the market. They have evolved a great deal from the days of Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons. You don’t even need leg warmers or leotards. Look online for one of the many websites that review the workouts. Some of them even include short video clips so you know what you’d be buying.
If you enjoy walking, jogging, biking or swimming, enter a race. It’s a great way to stay motivated.
Check local athletic stores and recreation centers. Many of them have walking clubs or will help you pair up with others in your area who have similar fitness or weight loss goals. Not only will you get motivation for your weight loss workout, you’ll also meet some great new friends.
Play with your kids — and your spouse. Romping in the yard or roughhousing in the living room is a great weight loss workout that also helps you bond with the most important people in your life. If you can’t get them away from the video games, get one of the new exercise-based games so you can all have fun together.
A weight loss workout does not have to drudgery. Find the right workout and it will soon become the highlight of your day.
