Eat Stop Eat: the "no diet" way to lose weight for good -- and keep it off

Lose Weight Now: 25 Days to Weight Loss, Day 11

by angela.booth on June 20, 2010

Can you believe we’re already on day 11 of our 25 days to weight loss? We’re well on our way to your goal. Today we’re going to talk about safe weight loss.

You’ve probably figured out that this 25-day program is a safe weight loss program — about as safe as you can get.

In this program you are simply learning new eating habits: You’re not eating between meals and you’re skipping those second helpings. You’re learning to focus on the foods your body needs: protein, whole grains, fruit, vegetables, healthy fats and water. You’re also incorporating at least 30 minutes of exercise in your day.

Your food journal is helping you weed out your unhealthy habits: junk food, stress eating etc. Odds are, you are seeing some pretty good results too. That’s great — keep on doing what you’re doing and you will lose a significant amount of weight, following these safe weight loss techniques.

A safe weight loss rate, as you’ve probably heard, is 1 to 2 lbs per week (after an initial weight loss of 5 lbs or so). That initial fast weight loss is probably the result of water loss. While we’d all like to continue losing 5 lbs per week, it just isn’t safe: Your body would likely be losing muscle as well as fat and it would become dehydrated as well.

But I feel fine, you’d say. While it’s true that you might feel all right, your body may react in ways that you may not know for years. Consider screen idol Audrey Hepburn, whose waifish appearance was largely the result of malnutrition during World War II. While the world envied her stick-thin figure, she suffered many health problems, including difficulty in bearing children later in life. Your body may act likewise if you resort to starvation dieting. Just because you think it’s safe weight loss, doesn’t mean your body agrees.

Your friends and relatives may not be so thrilled at your crash diet either. Most of us become quite cranky when we’re hungry and we’re not very nice to be around. Losing weight at a more reasonable pace is better for everyone in the long run.

So-called natural weight loss products are not the way to go either. Just because the label says the ingredients are all natural does not mean they are all safe weight loss solutions. After all, arsenic is all natural too.

Safe weight loss means losing pounds and inches at a reasonable pace using foods your body was meant to have. Going at a reasonable pace gives your body a chance to adjust to eating less food as well as eating healthier foods.

So, if you hit a weight-loss plateau or you don’t think you’re losing as fast as you should, relax and be patient. Review your weight-loss journal and correct any bad habits that may have crept in. Ramp up your exercise a little and the pounds will drop off again. Don’t resort to the many weight-loss gimmicks out there: There were thin people around before those items ever came on the market, so you don’t need them in order to lose weight.

Safe weight loss will help you lose weight and keep it off. Use them and you’ll be around to tell your grandchildren about them.
