Before you go on a diet, it’s imperative that you see a doctor for a thorough check-up and let them know that you want to go on a diet.
Being overweight is certainly unhealthy, but dieting could be detrimental to your health too - if you don’t get all of the facts first.
First of all, you need to know why you are overweight. The obvious answer would be because you are taking in more calories than you burn, but that is not always the case. Your excess pounds could also be a symptom of a serious medical condition, which would require treatment.
For instance:
Cushing’s Syndrome causes the body’s adrenal glands to make too much of a hormone called cortisol. Sometimes this is caused by an adrenal gland tumor. Other symptoms are a round, red face, acne, ulcers, skin that bruises easily, and excess hair growth,
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can cause obesity. Another symptom to look out for is excess hair growth. It can also cause acne or irregular hair growth, dandruff, high cholestorol, and infertily.
An underactive thyroid can cause weight gain. Another symptom of an underactive thyroid is fatigue.
So if you had any of these conditions, or any other medical condition which caused weight gain, then a simple diet alone might not help you lose weight - AND you would be neglecting your health because you would need medical treatment to address those symptoms!
Also, some overweight people are at risk for Type II diabetes. A doctor could tell you if you are at risk for Type II diabetes, and advise you as to what steps you need to take; you would want to follow a specific diet plan in that case, and would have to monitor your blood sugar regularly.
Your doctor may discover that you have high cholesterol, which would also affect what type of diet is recommended for you.
So you can see, there are many potential causes of being overweight, and some of them could be lifethreatening if not treated properly. So you will want to make sure that you consult a doctor about any type of diet or exercise plan that you are considering.
Are you afraid that if you suggest a particular diet to your doctor, he or she will disapprove of it? That’s probably a sign that the diet is not a healthy one and it is some kind of fad diet that you hope will crash the weight off quickly. It’s better to use some common sense and follow your doctor’s recommendations.
